STATE OF NEW YORK

GEORGE E. PATAKI
GOVERNOR

May 7, 2003

Dear Friends;

It is a pleasure to send greetings and warm regards to all gathered for the 50th Anniversary Gala of the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation.

This significant milestone is a fitting tribute to the vision and tireless efforts of your founder, the late R. Brinkley Smithers, and current president, Adele C. Smithers. These two extraordinary individuals have dedicated their lives to building an awareness and understanding of alcoholism as a treatable disease.

A half century ago, the stigma attached to alcoholism meant that little, if any, focus was placed on what truly is a major health problem. Since then, the Foundation has been widely recognized as an effective pioneer in serving the unique needs of those challenged by the devastating problems associated with alcohol dependency, and providing them with greater opportunities for treatment and recovery.

On behalf of all New Yorkers, I commend the steadfast commitment and generous support of everyone affiliated with the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation and its noble purpose. In celebrating 50 years of philanthropic work, you can take pride in knowing that your leadership and accomplishments have empowered thousands to move forward and lead productive and fulfilling lives, and contributed in meaningful ways toward the betterment of society as a whole.

Best wishes for a memorable evening and continued success in your worthy endeavors.

Very truly yours,

George Pataki
