Dear Adele;
Please accept my warmest greetings and congratulations as you gather to celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation.
Since 1952, your organization has been operative in shifting public awareness and
treatment of what is now accepted as a legitimate but curable disease - alcoholism.
Thanks to the work of groups such as yours, men and women suffering from alcohol
addiction can choose from a range of treatment options, as opposed to hiding their
illness to avoid negative stigma. Further I would like to congratulate the recipient
of your Lifetime Achievement Award, Betty Ford. She has been instrumental in this
positive social movement, and for this she has my deepest gratitude.
Again, congratulations and thank you for your dedication and hard work. I hope that
you will continue to serve the residents of New York State for many years to come.
