Biography
Joseph J. Calandra, M.D. was elected as a member of the Foundation's Board in April 2001.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude from the State University of
New York at Albany and a Medical Doctor degree from New York Medical College. He is a
founding member of South Carolina Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in Charleston,
South Carolina. He served on the Board of the Trident Independent Physicians Association
for five years, two of which he served as President.
Dr. Calandra received his board certification in orthopedics in 1992 and was recertified by
the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons in 2001. He has extensive experience treating patients
who have been injured while under the influence of alcohol and is quite familiar with the medical
consequences of alcoholism and related diseases. Currently, Dr. Calandra has started a new
consulting company, Performance Consultants, LLC.
He is actively teaching both medical students and orthopaedic residents at the Medical University
of South Carolina as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He
is serving as a Board member of the Charleston Metro Sports Council. Dr. Calandra continues to be
involved in the care of many professional and collegiate athletes in the Charleston community.
He is a founding board member of P.L.A.Y. ( Positive Life Attitudes for Youth), who's mission is
encourage alcohol and drug prevention through healthy live style alternatives for adolescents.
